Our family reads like crazy. In 2018 I read about 40 books and I hope to read another 30 or so in 2019. My wife reads more. We’re always reading books to our two boys and it’s one of life’s greatest joys for everyone in our family. When Roen was 2 we asked him what he wanted for Christmas about 50 times and every time he said he wanted books. Very proud papa!

If I had to wager a guess I’d say we’ve read 300 different books to our kids. And we’ve definitely read a few books over 50 times. All that being said- here are my favorites.

Philomena’s New Glasses

Philomena’s New Glasses is a truly silly and goofy book. The pictures are hilarious, the story is perfectly nonsensical, and it even has good lessons sprinkled in. It’s a very quick read, maybe 2-3 minutes, so it is perfect for the rush-to-bedtime nights. The pictures are engaging and the story is funny for both kid and adult. Perfect for kids of any age below 5. We’re big fans!

Come Over To My House

This book I could read to Roen every day for the rest of my life. It does a great job of showing different places around the world while being silly, engaging, and fun. Each highlighted house does a great job of promoting diversity without being too forceful, in-your-face, or political in any way– something that is a major turn off for me in kids books. It’s a charming story of friends and appreciating where you live, wherever that may be.

Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You

A sappy choice, but this book is my absolute favorite, although neither of my kids are big fans to be quite honest. The title says it all- this book describes that wherever you are, your parents love will be with you. It even mentions baseball which gets me every time. The picture art is amazing and unique. It’s a beautiful book and I cannot recommend it high enough to all parents.

One final note: if you want a book for free every month (really!) sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. They’ve given away over 100,000,000 books already and we’ve gotten some great ones- including Philomena’s New Glasses!
